In 2020, a controversial dispute over the right to abortion erupted in Poland after the Constitutional Court (appointed by the ruling party) ruled that eugenic abortion was unconstitutional. As a result of this decision, abortion became practically impossible in Poland, triggering a wave of protests and demonstrations, both against and in favor of limiting the right to abortion. Many of these protests took place in Warsaw and other major cities, attended by thousands of people. The largest one was in the capital, which exceeded 70,000 participants. Most of them were peaceful, but some resulted in clashes with police and arrests. At one of the protests, protesters were surrounded by groups of hooligans who used violence towards the assembled protesters. During the protests, there were numerous police provocations and it is worth noting that all of this took place during the peak of the pandemic. The authorities were well aware of the consequences. At the time, a ban on gatherings was in effect in Poland. This conflict became one of the most significant political events in Poland in 2020 and remains controversial to this day.
